1-2-3 Campaing Against Global Warming

The 1-2-3 Campaign Against Global Warming, conducted in 2001by the First Unitarian Church of Portland in Portland, Oregon, is one of many socially-conscious programs produced by the church for congregants.

The initial goal was to reduce household CO2 production by 1,300 pounds per year. The result was 1,408 pounds per year—exceeding goals and inspiring congregants to further action.

In addition to reducing household thermostats by one degree in winter, reducing driving speed by two miles per hour at speeds of 60 miles per hour or more and substituting three compact florescent light bulbs for traditional light bulbs in high traffic areas of the home, 1-2-3 campaign participants made the following behavior changes:

• Bought more compact fluorescent bulbs
• Lowered thermostat more
• Drove less – increased walking, biking, public transportation
• Recycled more
• Took action at work
• Spread the word – friends, children, neighbors
• Started plan to reduce power consumption
• Planted trees
• Increased home insulation
• Purchased energy efficient appliances
• Reduced chemical fertilizers and pest control
• Used canvass bags for groceries
